Oscars 2009 Nominees: Complete List of 81st Academy Awards Nominations

Oscars 2009 Nominees Review: ”Benjamin Button” and ”Slumdog Millionaire” lead with 13 and 10 nominations, respectively; Heath Ledger gets a Best Supporting Actor nod, but ”The Dark Knight” snubbed in Best Picture and Best Director categories

Academy Awards Nominees: With 13 nominations — including Best Picture, Best Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Supporting Actress (Taraji P. Henson), and Best Director (David Fincher) — The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the field of Academy Award contenders announced this morning in Los Angeles. As expected, Slumdog Millionaire scored big too, nabbing 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Danny Boyle), and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Not surprisingly, Heath Ledger was recognized for his supporting role in The Dark Knight, but a widely anticipated Best Picture nomination didn’t happen, and director Christopher Nolan came up empty as well. Other notable snubs: Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio’s turns in Gran Torino and Revolutionary Road, respectively. As far as the gameshow comment, art reflects life. Always has, always will. Game shows, reality shows…all that deal…they have become a large part of life and culture. For better or for worse.

The idea that Clint Eastwood isn’t even nominated for Grand Torino should lead to a boycott of this joke of a show. Torino was by far the best move of 2008. Dark Knight was good but Aaron Eckhart’s performance was better than Ledger’s and any movie revolving around a game show should be burned.

The Academy Awards is about the quality of the film and performance of its actors. At least that’s how it used to be. Just because a film does well at the box office, doesn’t mean it is a quality film regardless of who is starring in it. But I do think the Oscars have become somewhat political these past years. If the ratings continue to decline, then I suggest they only be broadcast via the internet.
It was the most talked about because he died before it was ever released. The hype escalated for the film after his untimely demise, but it wasn’t necessarily deserved to that magnitude. The Academy shouldn’t have to hand out an award every single time a young, beautiful person dies tragically.

You’re dead wrong about Heath Ledger. His Joker has been the most talked about performance the entire year. Michael Shannon’s performance while good is no where near as memorable as Ledger’s. Nor was anyone else’s for that matter. The public has spoken and as usual, the academy didn’t listen. Big surprise there.
Hoping for Mickey Rourke to win for “The Wrestler, but I feel Clint Eastwood should have definetly been nominated for “Gran Torino.” Feel like they nominated Kate Winslet for “The Reader” for best actress in order to make way for Penelope Cruz to win for “Vicky Cristina barcelona” which is a good thing. But I also want Taraji P. Henson to win also for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”

i believe james franco shouldve got nominated for milk and what about the ppl from slumdog millionaire

I think the awards show should open with a dance number like they use to do so many years ago. With the exception of excluding people of color, the AA use to be very exciting to watch. Too many people are nominated who don’t deserve it. Its all for ratings. Angelina and Brad to name a few.

Honestly, Dark Knight wasn’t that great. It was an exciting blockbuster. It didn’t really do anything exciting for film. Oh wait, they shot it for IMAX…big deal. Apathy is setting in… Seriously, the Academy still acknowledges film as an art form. Chillax illiterate, trendy, overweight Americans.

This year will be the worst broadcast ever. I mean Hugh Jackman hosting. Come on…we need a good comedian to keep us awake. Bring back Whoopie back or Billy Crystal. I won’t comment on the films nominated because the only one I seen was Benjamin Button and I was very dissapointed at that film.

I was thinking Michael Shannon for supporting actor, actually. The only salvation for Revolutionary Road was his performance. Also, in reference to Heath Ledger: He did well as the Joker in Dark Knight. True. However, in spite of that, there were better performances this past year. Giving someone an award just because it was their personal best and they were struck down in their prime is nonsensical. It may have been his best, but he died young. More seasoned actors had better performances

I hope Richard Jenkins wins th e Best Actor! He was great in The Visitor as he is in everything he does! Also, go Slumdog go! I am secretly hoping Robert Downey Jr wins for Tropic Thunder.

No Dark Knight??? No Chris Nolan??? Is the Academy telling us that we spent $600,000,000.00 on the SIXTH best movie/director last year??? Mix that with Hugh Jackman hosting, and I’m not even concerned with wiping the Academy’s spit out of my face in time to catch the awards. I’ll be watching my “The Dark Knight” DVD instead. You should do the same.

With an Oscar snub for The Dark Knight and Chris Nolan, the Academy has made the statement that “This awards show is not for you, the people who have supported this source material for over 50 years and the people who spent over a half-billion dollars in appreciation for this work of art!” I’m inclined to agree. These awarads are clearly not for us, therefore I intend to BOYCOTT this broadcast. I encourage you to do the same, and stop letting these people tell you you don’t know what you like.

I saw the wrestler and liked it but I didn’t think Mickey Rourke was that good in it. I had a hard time hearing what he said because he mumbled most of his lines and the movie was mostly about wrestling and getting beat up in the ring. I loved Brad Pitt and all the different stages he went thru in the movie and his performance was so moving. And as for Angie-she was magnificent-maybe because I am a mother and I related to her moving performance. I wish them both the best.

  1. Eastwood should have had three nominations
this omission is ridiculous as ledgers inclusion

  2. Yes, I agree with you. But what shall both of us do?
